ISSUE/PROBLEM
Ven-Tel reports that the Ven-Tel 9600 Plus modem is different than the Ven-Tel PEP modem in the ARCONFIG of NARB V1.2.
Ven-Tel no longer makes the listed PEP modem that had been OEMed from Telebit. Therefore, Ven-Tel 9600 Plus or 9600 Plus II no longer functions as a modem type of "Telebit/Ven-Tel PEP" in ARCONFIG.
SOLUTION
To use the newer VenTel modems select modem type "Special Configuration." Then program the modem to do the dialing (on the originate side) and then program the other modem to answer.
The AT commands are the following:
ANSWER SIDE
AT&F&W1&Y1
AT\N3\Q3%F2X1V0M0&W1
(Then after programming the modem. Execute BRIDGE)
In ARCONFIG, this side is not set for auto connect=NO.
ORIGINATING SIDE
AT&F&W1
AT\N3\Q3%F2X1V0M0&W1
AT&Z1=phone number
AT*V1=DS1
Then make sure the ANSWER side is up first. Turn this modem on and let the modems connect first. Then execute BRIDGE after the modems have connected.
In ARCONFIG, make sure that this side is set to auto connect=YES.
After this is done the NARB/NARR will function.

ISSUE/PROBLEM
Using MultiTech V.32 modems with the Asynchronous Router
SOLUTION
Some dip switch settings on the bottom of the modem need to be changed. The following settings worked in a test:
--------- -----------------
|-------- -----------------
--------- -----------------
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
The modem type in ACONFIG was set for "Hayes Compatible."

ISSUE/PROBLEM
Is the NetWare Asynchronous Router a current Novell Product?
SOLUTION
1.The Asynchronous Router no longer exists as a separately sold Novell product and is considered obsolete. However, as a courtesy to owners of NetWare v3.11 and NetWare v2.2 operating systems, the most current version is available for download from NOVLIB Library 9 as ARO.ZIP.
2.Because the Asynchronous Router is not an NLM, an Asynchronous Router cannot be an internal router for NetWare v3.11 operating system.
3.The Asynchronous Router is different in several ways from the earlier Asynchronous Bridge.
■You ACONFIG instead of ARCONFIG.
■Network addresses must be unique instead of the same.
■Although essentially the same, it is called a Router rather than a Bridge.
■From time to time as documented in ARO.ZIP, certain features have been improved.
■Protected Mode is currently not available.
Note: Although the current Asynchronous Router is somewhat improved over earlier versions it still has the following weaknesses:
■It is very difficult to use modems not listed on the ACONFIG menu.
■It is very fragile if line noise exists.
■It is much slower than a high speed synch line and is therefore only practical for light duty transfer of small files.
■It does not load balance.
■It will not work on data lines.

SYMPTOM
Unable to connect
ISSUE/PROBLEM
Unable to connect using US Robotics modems.
SOLUTION
Disabling the ARQ result codes as well as the result code sets has been known to help.
Use an Asynchronous communication application to program the modems this way:
AT&A0 (arq result codes are disabled. Suppression of the /ARQ codes doesn't affect the error control protocol.)
ATX0 <--- {changed from at&x0} (basic subset returns these codes):
OK
CONNECT
RING
NO CARRIER
ERROR
Remember to write these into memory at both the receiving and calling modems with the &w parameter.

SYMPTOM
Missing configuration information
ISSUE/PROBLEM
When you GEN an Asynchronous Router on a fast machine such as some of the ALRs, ROUTEGEN will sometimes fail to insert vital information such as LAN addresses into your ROUTER.EXE file.
SOLUTION
Do one of the three options listed below:
■Run DCONFIG against ROUTER.EXE.
■Slow down the machine while running ROUTEGEN.
■Set CMOS to 1 wait state while regenerating.

ISSUE/PROBLEM
Can each of the four ports on a WNIN (or WNIM+) board be configured for a different BPS rate?
SOLUTION
No, they must all be set for the same rate. However, if you set them all for the rate of the fastest modem, they will all work because they can automatically step down.
